Rare South African and Griqua Token Coins,
Coins and Bank Notes

There has been a great deal of distortion of the facts when it comes to the early history of South Africa's coinage, and in particular, the Griqua Town "coins" of 1815/16 which were never used as currency in South Africa.

On this page we provide an accurate and comprehensively researched background to the remarkable history of the coins and bank notes which played a major role in the lives of the Griqua people from 1868 to 1932. It is important, as numismatists, that we do this as the Griquas were the first "settlers" of Southern Africa and their pioneering numismatic history is as rich as that of the more publicised bank notes and coin of the Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek.
